If a husband-wife couple is not essential for marriage, why is a couple essential?

If marriage is a mating relationship designed to create permanent families to protect, educate, and nurture children, a couple is a biological requirement because humans reproduce by heterosexual coupling. However, if mating becomes extraneous to a reinvented marriage of any consenting adults, doesn't the requirement of a couple become vestigial?
