How do I choose my new look?

I'm going to college soon, and I intend to reinvent myself to some extent. Currently, I'm just a huge (wide/tall frame and fat) guy. I wear steel toed shoes, whatever t-shirts I can find that fit, and a lot of black. That's as far as my knowledge of fashion extends, so I need descriptions, visual aides, etc. If you need more details say so.
