Where is the mass that is converted to energy coming from in a nuclear reaction?

Yes, you know the answer. There is energy in the Strong Nuclear Force holding the atom together. (Think of it as stretched rubber bands under tension holding 2 things together. Cut the rubber band and they snap together releasing elastic energy) Break the Strong Nuclear Force and that energy is released. E = mc^2 requires that that energy contribute to the mass of the atom before the split.
